“On The Spot” Update

March 2, 2012

A few months ago we introduced “On The Spot” vehicle registration. This allows our customers to get their car or truck safety inspection in our AutoCare facility and then go to our customer service counter and complete their registration. We are able to print the registration certificate and issue a new decal for the license plate all at the same time. The customer pays the registration fee with their credit card and we do not charge an additional fee for this service. It has been very successful and has saved our customers a lot of time and money.
NEW ! We are now able to extend to our customers the ability to renew the registration on their ATV’s, UTV’s, and boats at our customer service counter. No more waiting for the mail or time consuming trips to Hurricane. Just one more service we can offer for our good customers.

True Value Market

February 27, 2012

Charlene and I just returned from a working weekend in Orlando.  While it was fun to enjoy some sunshine and warm weather, it was mostly work.  We took one day and drove over to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center.  It was fascinating to see the huge saturn rockets used in the Apollo moon program and the Space Shuttles that were recently retired.  It was interesting to see alligators along the roadways and parking lots all around the entire complex.

The Orange County Convention Center is a massive complex that was home for our semi-annual meetings and buying market.  While there I had extensive education on new computer functionality and I participated in many training meetings.  The primary reason for attending is to buy for the summer and fall selling season.  It is a pretty busy time to meet with so many vendors and try to place intelligent orders to be in stock with the right product at the right time at the right price.  We submitted lots of orders and also found some outstanding closeout bargains, some of which are already in the store !  While they last, we pass the savings on to our good customers.  It is fun to see new product and innovative new ideas, but it is always good to be back home.

Tire Tread Depth – Washington vs. Lincoln

Today’s Brackens AutoCare article discusses the effect of tire tread depth on braking. When talking about stopping power, Enterprise area drivers tend to focus on brakes. But our tires are where the rubber meets the road. So having good brakes isn’t enough. Enterprise motorists have to have tires with enough traction to translate braking power into stopping power.

Let’s focus on stopping in wet Enterprise conditions. In order for a tire to have good contact with the road, it has to move the water out of the way. If it can’t move the water, the tire will actually ride on top of a thin film of water.

That’s called hydroplaning. At Brackens AutoCare we want our customers to know that if it’s really bad, you can actually spin out of control. At best, you won’t stop as fast.

So how does a tire move water? It has channels for water to flow through. Look at a tire and you’ll see channels: channels that run around the tire and channels that flow across the tire. They’re designed to direct water away from the tire so it can contact the road better.

And the deeper the channel, the more water it can move. A brand new tire has very deep channels and can easily move a lot of water. As the tire wears down, the channels become shallower and can move less water. When it wears down enough, it can seriously affect your ability to stop on wet Enterprise roads. So that’s why it’s so important for Enterprise drivers to replace the tires on their pickups when they get worn. Consumer Reports and other advocate groups call for a standard of 3/32 of an inch and they have the studies to prove it.

By comparison, you’ve probably seen the wear indicator that’s molded into tires. When tires are worn 3/32 of an inch, the tread wear bar is visible. So the recommended standard has twice the tread depth as a completely worn out tire.

And that little bit of additional tread makes a big difference. Stopping distances are cut dramatically on wet roads. A safe stop from UT freeway speeds with 4/32 of an inch of tread would result in a crash with worn out tires.

There’s an easy way to tell when a tire’s worn to 4/32 of an inch. Just insert a quarter into the tread. Put it in upside down. If the tread doesn’t cover George Washington’s hairline, it’s time to replace your tires. With a Canadian quarter, the tread should cover the numbers in the year stamp.

You’ve probably heard of this technique using a penny and Abe Lincoln’s head. That measure gives you 2/32 of an inch – half the suggested amount.

Of course, tires are a big ticket item for Enterprise car owners. Most of us want to get as many miles out of them as we can. But there’s a real safety trade-off. It’s your choice.

At Brackens AutoCare in Enterprise UT (84725) we install quality NAPA replacement parts. Give us a call at 435.878.2251. To learn more about NAPA AutoCare, visit www.NAPAAutoCare.com.

Monobor-Chlorate Now ! What ???????

January 16, 2012

Now is the very best time to apply a granular vegetation killer to control those pesky spring and summer weeds.  A 20 lb pail will effectively cover an area up to 1,000 sq.ft.  Use it around or near asphalt, buildings, concrete, ditch banks, fence lines, gravel driveways, patios, picnic areas, sidewalks, storage yards, and vacant lots.  The best scenario is to apply just before a rain storm or while there is a little snow on the ground.  In order to work effectively is must be incorporated into the soil BEFORE the weed seeds begin to germinate in the early spring.  Monobor-Chlorate provides a non-selective kill of weeds and grasses with a single treatment.

Stop by our store and talk with one of our several professionals who can provide you with more information on this “ready to use” product.

Is the World Coming to an End ???

January 5, 2012

Do you buy into the Mayan calendar theory that believes the end of the world as we know it is imminent?  Supposedly the 5125 year Mesoamerican calendar actually ends on December 21, 2012.  Doomsday predictors have coupled this with some biblical prophecy and some astronomical alignments and have concluded we need to prepare for world’s end in December.   There is even a website (mayanlastday.com) that has popped up where you can actually purchase magnets and key chains with countdown clocks that allow you to track the coming apocalypse and supposedly prepare.  Does it come as a surprise that you can actually download an app to track the ominous countdown on your android or iPhone.  What will they think of next ?

Perhaps we should live our lives like this will really happen and we’ll have a better 2012.
